US President Donald Trump has said he “wasn’t worried” during a shooting that disrupted a major political and media gathering in the US capital, as authorities continue to investigate the motive behind the attack.

The incident took place during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, attended by senior government officials, journalists, and public figures. Gunfire was reported near a security checkpoint outside the venue, causing panic among attendees.

Secret Service agents responded immediately, securing the area and evacuating the president and other officials to safety. Authorities confirmed that the situation was brought under control within minutes and that a suspect was detained at the scene.

Speaking after the event, Mr Trump appeared calm and dismissive of the threat. “I wasn’t worried… we live in a crazy world,” he said, suggesting that such incidents are part of modern security risks.

According to officials, the president initially believed the sound to be a minor disturbance before being informed of the seriousness of the situation. Despite the disruption, he indicated that public events should continue and not be cancelled due to isolated acts of violence.

Law enforcement officials said the suspect, a 31-year-old man, approached the outer security perimeter armed with weapons and attempted to breach the checkpoint before opening fire. A Secret Service agent was injured during the incident but is in stable condition after being protected by body armour. No other serious injuries have been reported.

Investigators are examining whether the attack was targeted or politically motivated. The suspect’s background, movements, and possible connections are under review, and federal charges are expected.

The shooting has raised renewed concerns about security at high-profile events in Washington. While officials have praised the rapid response that prevented further harm, questions remain about how the suspect was able to approach a heavily secured area.

Mr Trump’s comments have drawn attention for their defiant tone as he projected confidence in the aftermath of the incident. The investigation remains ongoing.
