South Korea Emerges as the Top Overseas Escape for Japanese Travelers

South Korea has become the leading overseas destination for Japanese travelers in 2026, as millions of visitors choose the neighboring country for its convenient location, growing cultural appeal and relatively affordable travel experiences.

New tourism figures show that more than one in four Japanese people traveling abroad between January and July chose South Korea, giving the country the largest share of Japan’s outbound travel market. Around 2.28 million Japanese visitors traveled to South Korea during the seven-month period, an increase of 18.8 percent compared with the same period last year. The number represented about 28 percent of all Japanese outbound travelers, putting South Korea ahead of destinations including the United States, Taiwan and Thailand.

One of the biggest reasons behind the growing popularity is proximity. Short flight times make South Korea an attractive choice for travelers looking for a quick international getaway without the expense and long journey associated with destinations in Europe or North America. Increased airline capacity between Japan and South Korea has also made travel between the two countries easier.

The popularity of Korean culture has added another powerful reason to visit. From K-pop and Korean dramas to beauty products and fashion, South Korean culture continues to attract international attention. For many Japanese travelers, a trip to Seoul offers the opportunity to experience famous shopping districts, explore Korean food and visit places connected to the country’s globally popular entertainment and lifestyle trends.

South Korea’s appeal is also expanding beyond Seoul. Tourism campaigns and improved connections through regional airports have encouraged more Japanese visitors to explore destinations such as Busan, Jeju and other parts of the country. Japanese arrivals through several regional airports have recorded particularly strong growth, reflecting a growing interest in experiencing more than just the capital city.

For travelers, South Korea offers a combination that is difficult to ignore: vibrant cities, traditional culture, world-famous cuisine, shopping, scenic coastlines and modern entertainment. Seoul remains a major attraction, while Busan offers beaches and coastal experiences and Jeju provides a quieter escape surrounded by natural beauty.
