Minecraft Billionaire Lists Beverly Hills Mega-Mansion for $70 Million, Seeking to Reclaim Record-Breaking Purchase Price After 12 Years

A lavish Beverly Hills mansion once at the centre of a high-profile bidding battle involving music superstars Beyoncé and Jay-Z has returned to the real estate market with a $70 million asking price, as its owner, Swedish video game creator Markus Persson, seeks to sell the property for the same amount he paid for it more than a decade ago.

Persson, widely known as “Notch” and the creator of the globally popular video game Minecraft, purchased the extraordinary estate in 2014 after reportedly outbidding several prospective buyers, including Beyoncé and Jay-Z. The acquisition made headlines at the time, setting a record for a residential property sale in Beverly Hills. Now, 12 years later, the mansion’s relisting offers a striking illustration of how the ultra-luxury housing market has evolved.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Persson is asking $70 million for the property, which sits in the prestigious Trousdale Estates neighbourhood overlooking Los Angeles. The residence spans approximately 22,300 square feet on nearly an acre of land, combining expansive living spaces, elaborate entertainment facilities and panoramic views of the surrounding city.

The mansion features eight bedrooms and 15 bathrooms, alongside a swimming pool, an elevator, a private cinema and a recording studio. Persson also added a private nightclub equipped with a DJ booth and bar, transforming the property into an entertainment destination as much as a private residence. Among its more unusual features are an extravagant candy room and a wine cellar designed to accommodate approximately 2,500 bottles.

The house was originally developed by Bruce Makowsky, a luxury property developer known for creating lavish homes packed with high-end amenities. When Persson bought it, the sale reportedly included extensive furnishings and electronics, reinforcing the mansion’s reputation as one of Beverly Hills’ most extravagant residential properties.

Persson’s extraordinary wealth followed Microsoft’s $2.5 billion acquisition of Mojang, the company behind Minecraft, in 2014. The game’s commercial success helped establish him as one of the most recognisable fortunes in the global video game industry, enabling the purchase of a residence that attracted international attention.

However, the mansion’s unchanged asking price reflects a broader challenge facing Los Angeles’ luxury property market. Developers have spent years building increasingly large and expensive speculative mansions, many designed to attract wealthy buyers who may be willing to pay a premium for distinctive architecture and exclusive amenities. The resulting abundance of high-end properties has made pricing more complicated, even in prestigious neighbourhoods.

Although Los Angeles home values have risen substantially since 2014, that growth has not translated automatically into higher prices for every ultra-luxury estate. A $70 million listing also does not guarantee a sale at that price, particularly when buyers have multiple extravagant properties to consider.

Persson is reportedly selling because he no longer spends much time in Los Angeles. Whether a buyer will pay the full asking price remains uncertain.

The listing is more than the sale of a celebrity-owned mansion. It is a reminder that even properties associated with extraordinary wealth and record-breaking transactions remain subject to market realities. In the world of luxury real estate, prestige may attract attention, but finding a buyer willing to match a seller’s expectations is still the ultimate test.
