SpaceX Lands $946 Million NASA Deal to Fly More Astronauts to Space Station Through 2030

SpaceX has secured a $946 million NASA contract for three additional astronaut missions to the International Space Station, extending the company’s crewed-flight operations for the US space agency through 2030.

NASA announced the expanded agreement on Friday, bringing the total number of astronaut flights SpaceX is contracted to conduct under the program to 17 and pushing the overall contract value to approximately $5.92 billion.

The deal further strengthens SpaceX’s role in NASA’s human spaceflight operations at a time when the agency continues to rely on commercial companies to transport astronauts to and from low Earth orbit.

Under the expanded agreement, SpaceX will use its Crew Dragon spacecraft and Falcon 9 rockets to carry astronauts to the International Space Station. The missions will support NASA’s ongoing crew-rotation requirements and help maintain a continuous human presence aboard the orbiting laboratory.

SpaceX has become a major transportation provider for NASA astronauts through the agency’s Commercial Crew Program, which was created to develop privately operated systems capable of carrying people into orbit.

The company’s Crew Dragon has already become a regular part of NASA’s spaceflight operations, launching astronauts aboard Falcon 9 rockets before docking with the International Space Station. After completing their missions, crews return to Earth aboard the spacecraft.

NASA’s expanded agreement comes as the agency continues to maintain SpaceX as a key US crew transportation option while also working to preserve a second domestic system through Boeing.

Having more than one US crew transportation system is important for NASA’s ability to maintain flexibility in astronaut missions and station operations. The latest contract means SpaceX will continue carrying a substantial share of NASA’s crews to the ISS over the coming years.

The International Space Station remains an important platform for scientific research, technology demonstrations and international cooperation. Astronauts aboard the station conduct experiments designed to study how humans, materials and biological systems behave in microgravity, while also maintaining the complex facility in orbit.

The new missions will therefore play a role beyond transportation, supporting NASA’s broader scientific and operational activities aboard the station.

The contract also arrives as NASA prepares for an evolving era of human space exploration. While the ISS continues to support research in low Earth orbit, NASA is simultaneously pursuing its Artemis program and plans for future missions involving the Moon and, eventually, deeper space.

For SpaceX, the expanded NASA agreement represents another major step in the company’s growing role in government-supported human spaceflight. Its ability to repeatedly launch and recover Crew Dragon spacecraft has made the company an important part of NASA’s strategy for transporting astronauts without relying exclusively on government-developed systems.

The value of the expanded contract also illustrates the scale of NASA’s commercial partnerships. By purchasing crew transportation services from private companies, NASA can focus more of its resources on exploration missions and other long-term objectives while commercial providers handle regular transportation to low Earth orbit.
