The death toll from the devastating fire at a crowded music bar in Bangkok has risen to 30, making it the Thai capital’s deadliest blaze in 17 years as police intensify their investigation into alleged safety violations that may have trapped dozens of people inside the burning venue. More than 70 people remain hospitalized, with at least 24 reported to be in critical condition.

The fire broke out late Sunday night at the Rong Beer Na Ladprao music bar in northern Bangkok, where hundreds of patrons had gathered for live entertainment. Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control within about 30 minutes, but by then the flames and thick smoke had already claimed dozens of lives and left many others seriously injured.

As investigators examined the charred building, survivors described chaotic scenes in which people desperately searched for a way out but were unable to find accessible emergency exits. Several witnesses alleged that some doors were locked or blocked, while emergency exit signs were either missing or difficult to locate in the smoke-filled venue. Police said many of the victims were found inside windowless bathrooms, where they are believed to have sought refuge after failing to escape through the building’s exits. Investigators are examining whether negligence, inadequate fire safety measures, and possible building code violations contributed to the high number of casualties. Preliminary findings have also pointed to a possible electrical short circuit in a ceiling-mounted air-conditioning unit as the cause of the blaze, though the investigation remains ongoing.

The tragedy has sparked renewed scrutiny of fire safety standards at entertainment venues across Thailand, with calls for stricter enforcement of building regulations and emergency preparedness. Mourners gathered outside the destroyed venue on Tuesday, leaving flowers and messages of condolence as families continued to identify victims.
