Deadly Hospital Fire in Islamabad Claims Lives of 15 Newborns

At least 15 newborns have been killed after a fire broke out at a state-run hospital in Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, in one of the country’s deadliest hospital fires in recent years.

The blaze erupted at around 7 a.m. on Wednesday at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), one of Islamabad’s main public hospitals. According to local broadcaster Geo TV, the fire began on the third floor of the Mother and Child Hospital’s gynaecology ward, where newborn babies were being cared for.

Initial reports said the fire was linked to a fault in the hospital’s air-conditioning system. Pakistani media later reported that an air-conditioner compressor may have exploded inside the nursery, although authorities are investigating the exact cause.

There were reportedly 16 newborns in the ward when the fire broke out, with only one infant rescued. The conflicting early casualty figures reflect the fact that the incident was still developing when initial reports emerged; Pakistani authorities and international news agencies have reported figures ranging from 14 to 15 deaths.

Emergency crews rushed to the hospital as thick smoke and flames spread through the ward. Six fire brigade vehicles and four ambulances were involved in the rescue operation, according to Islamabad authorities. The blaze was brought under control, while cooling operations continued at the affected area.

The tragedy has sparked renewed concerns about safety standards and conditions in Pakistan’s public healthcare system. Government hospitals provide subsidised healthcare to large sections of the population but have frequently faced criticism over overcrowding, limited resources, maintenance problems and management challenges.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered an immediate investigation into the incident and called for those responsible to be identified and dealt with strictly. The affected ward was cordoned off as authorities began examining the circumstances surrounding the fire.

The loss of so many newborn lives has sent shockwaves through Islamabad, with families and hospital staff facing the devastating aftermath of a fire that struck one of the most vulnerable areas of the medical facility. As investigators examine the cause, questions are expected to focus on the hospital’s electrical and cooling systems, emergency preparedness and whether adequate fire-safety measures were in place.
