A major flood has struck Nepal’s Bhotekoshi River in Rasuwa district, triggering warnings for communities living along the river as authorities work to assess the extent of the damage.
Rasuwa Chief District Officer Narendra Pariyar said officials received information about the sudden and powerful flood at around 9:15 a.m. on Wednesday. Initial reports indicated that the flood surge originated from the Tibet side of the border.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the full scale of the destruction, with assessment teams working to determine whether homes, roads, bridges or other infrastructure have been affected.
“We received information around 9:15 this morning that a major flood had come from the Tibet side,” Pariyar said, adding that it was too early to determine the exact extent of the damage.
The sudden rise in water levels has also raised concerns beyond Rasuwa. Officials have urged residents living along the Bhotekoshi River and downstream areas to remain highly vigilant as the river flows through or affects communities in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha and Chitwan districts.
Residents in vulnerable riverside settlements have been advised to stay away from riverbanks and closely follow warnings from local authorities as emergency agencies monitor the situation.
The Bhotekoshi River is an important waterway in northern Nepal, with communities and infrastructure located along its course. A sudden flood originating upstream can travel rapidly downstream, increasing the risk to settlements and transport links.
