SpaceX, the rocket company founded by billionaire Elon Musk, has announced plans to build a massive new launch facility in Louisiana, marking one of the most ambitious expansions in the company’s history.
The $100 billion project, named Starbase Louisiana, will be developed across a 125,000-acre site in southern Louisiana. Construction is expected to begin next year, expanding SpaceX’s operations beyond its existing facilities in Texas and Florida.
The facility is designed to support thousands of Starship flights each year, with missions targeting Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars and destinations beyond. SpaceX has said it plans to launch its first Starship flight from the Louisiana base in 2029.
The development is expected to have a significant economic impact on the region. SpaceX estimates that the project will create more than 3,000 direct jobs, while Louisiana economic officials predict that more than 8,100 additional jobs could be generated indirectly.
The Louisiana Economic Development agency also estimates that workers at the new facility could earn substantially higher wages than the regional average. Average salaries are projected to be around 192% higher than the current average wage in the area.
The announcement comes as SpaceX accelerates its plans for Starship, a reusable spacecraft being developed for large-scale missions beyond Earth. The company sees Starship as a key part of future lunar and Mars missions, as well as its broader ambitions to expand human activity into space.
SpaceX has also been attracting major financial attention. In June, the company’s shares began trading on the Nasdaq in what was reported as the world’s biggest stock market debut.
If completed as planned, Starbase Louisiana could become a major centre for commercial spaceflight and bring thousands of high-paying jobs to the state. The project also signals SpaceX’s determination to dramatically increase its launch capacity as it prepares for a new era of missions to the Moon, Mars and beyond.
