Tesla Races Against Time to Clear Cybertruck Backlog Before Shutting Production Line for Major Factory Overhaul

2 min read

Tesla is preparing to increase Cybertruck production by introducing an additional work shift as the electric vehicle maker races to fulfil outstanding customer orders before temporarily dismantling its production line next year.

Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk announced the move on Saturday, November 7, saying the company has accumulated more Cybertruck orders than it can complete before the production line is taken apart for a planned expansion of its Cybercab manufacturing operations.

In a post on social media platform X, Musk said the existing Cybertruck order backlog was significantly larger than Tesla’s remaining production capacity before the company begins dismantling the line around June or July 2027. He added that Tesla would introduce an extra shift in an effort to complete as many outstanding orders as possible before the deadline.

The announcement highlights Tesla’s challenge of balancing demand for its futuristic electric pickup with its longer-term ambitions in autonomous transportation. The planned factory changes are expected to make room for expanded Cybercab production, reflecting Musk’s growing focus on robotaxis and self-driving technology.

The Cybertruck, unveiled in 2019 and launched commercially in 2023, was one of Tesla’s most ambitious vehicle projects. Its unconventional angular design, stainless-steel exterior and futuristic appearance attracted enormous attention even before production began. However, the vehicle has also faced manufacturing challenges, pricing concerns and questions about how quickly Tesla can turn initial enthusiasm into sustained sales.

Adding another production shift could help the company accelerate deliveries and reduce the number of customers waiting for their vehicles. However, the announcement does not guarantee that every outstanding order will be fulfilled before the production line is dismantled.

Tesla’s decision also raises questions about the future of Cybertruck manufacturing during the transition. The company has not provided detailed information about how production will be handled once the existing line is taken apart or whether the vehicle will return to manufacturing after the planned expansion.

For Tesla, the coming months could prove crucial. The company must demonstrate that it can meet customer expectations while redirecting valuable factory capacity towards its next major ambition.

As Musk pushes ahead with the Cybercab project, Tesla faces a race against time: clear the Cybertruck backlog before shifting its manufacturing priorities towards a future increasingly centred on autonomous vehicles.
