He commands one of the world’s most powerful business empires, controls companies shaping the future of artificial intelligence and space exploration, and has access to extraordinary political wealth. But after America’s midterm elections, billionaire Elon Musk faces a challenge that even his vast fortune could not prevent: a dramatic shift in political power.
Musk, one of Donald Trump’s closest billionaire allies and the Republican Party’s biggest financial backer, reportedly spent nearly half a billion dollars supporting Republican candidates during the election campaign. His objective was to help Republicans retain control of Congress and keep Texas firmly in Republican hands. Both efforts suffered major setbacks.
Democrats captured both chambers of Congress, while Gina Hinojosa defeated Republican Governor Greg Abbott, ending more than three decades of Republican dominance in Texas. For Musk, the result carries consequences far beyond electoral politics. Texas is home to Tesla’s headquarters, SpaceX’s Starbase operations and major ambitions for expanding artificial intelligence infrastructure.
The financial markets quickly reflected investor concerns. Tesla and SpaceX shares came under pressure following the election, as investors assessed the possibility of tougher regulatory scrutiny and delays to major projects.
The biggest challenge could come from Texas itself. Hinojosa has called for a halt to new data-centre projects until stronger protections for local communities are established. She has also advocated ending tax incentives and challenged favourable arrangements previously offered to Musk’s businesses by the outgoing governor.
Such changes could complicate SpaceX’s ambitious plans to expand its AI computing capacity, a major part of its future growth strategy. Rising electricity costs, environmental concerns and pressure on local infrastructure are also becoming increasingly important political issues.
Meanwhile, Democratic lawmakers are preparing to examine Musk’s government contracts, federal job cuts associated with DOGE and decisions involving Starlink’s satellite communications support for Ukraine.
The election has exposed an important reality of American politics: enormous wealth can influence campaigns, but it cannot guarantee political victories or protection from government scrutiny.
Musk’s companies remain major forces in technology, transportation and space exploration. Yet their relationship with Washington and Texas could enter a far more complicated chapter.
For the world’s richest businessman, the next battle may not be fought in boardrooms, stock markets or space launches, but in the halls of government, where political power has suddenly changed hands.
