A Flydubai flight travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv was diverted to Saudi Arabia on Wednesday after an incident involving the pilots, according to Israeli officials and aviation authorities.
Flight FZ1073, operated by a Boeing 737 MAX 8, was carrying 174 passengers when the incident occurred during the flight. Israeli officials said one pilot attacked the other, after which the aircraft experienced a rapid descent.
The aircraft was diverted to Tabuk in northwestern Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. The passengers were subsequently flown to Israel on a replacement aircraft.
Israeli officials said the incident involved an attack in the cockpit but did not describe it as a conventional hijacking. The circumstances surrounding the incident, including what led to the confrontation, remain under investigation.
Saudi Arabia’s National Transport Safety Center said it was investigating the emergency landing and working with relevant authorities to establish what happened.
The two pilots were taken for medical treatment following the incident. No serious injuries among passengers were reported.
The episode has raised questions about cockpit security and the procedures available to crews when an incident occurs inside the flight deck. Commercial airlines maintain strict controls over cockpit access and have established procedures for responding to threats to flight safety.
Flydubai said it was cooperating with authorities investigating the incident and urged caution over speculation while the inquiry continues.
The aircraft’s diversion to Saudi Arabia allowed the passengers to continue their journey after the emergency. The investigation is expected to examine the sequence of events inside the cockpit, the aircraft’s subsequent descent and the actions taken by the crew and authorities before the plane landed in Tabuk.
The incident comes as aviation authorities across the region continue to place strong emphasis on flight-deck security and the safe operation of international passenger services.
