Maldives Takes Five Major World Travel Awards as Global Tourism Spotlight Turns to the Islands

The Maldives has strengthened its position on the international tourism stage after securing five major honours at the 2026 World Travel Awards Asia, Oceania & Indian Ocean Gala Ceremony, held at CROSSROADS Maldives on September 27, World Tourism Day.

The island nation was recognised as the Indian Ocean’s Leading Destination, Leading Dive Destination, Leading Green Destination and Leading Honeymoon Destination for 2026. Visit Maldives Corporation was also named the Indian Ocean’s Leading Tourist Board, giving the country a broad sweep of recognition across destination travel, diving, sustainability, honeymoon tourism and tourism promotion.

The ceremony brought together tourism officials, hospitality executives, travel organisations and industry representatives from more than 40 countries. With the Maldives serving as the host destination, the event placed the country at the centre of a major regional gathering of the global travel industry.

The awards also extended beyond the five national honours. More than 15 Maldivian tourism and hospitality brands received recognition across categories covering resorts, aviation, diving, luxury travel, family holidays, honeymoon experiences and responsible tourism. Velana International Airport was named the Indian Ocean’s Leading Airport, while several Maldivian resorts collected individual regional titles.

The latest recognition adds to the Maldives’ long record at the World Travel Awards. According to Visit Maldives, the country was named the World’s Leading Destination for six consecutive years from 2020 through 2025. It has also repeatedly received Indian Ocean honours for destination, diving and tourism-board categories.

For the Maldives, tourism is far more than an international image campaign. The industry has played a central role in the country’s economic development since modern tourism began in 1972, when the destination started with two resorts. Today, the awards ceremony itself offered another opportunity to bring international tourism leaders directly into the Maldivian market.

Hosting the gala on World Tourism Day also gave the event a wider significance. The gathering combined international recognition with industry networking, allowing tourism businesses and destination representatives to connect with partners and markets across Asia, Oceania and the Indian Ocean.

The five awards do not change the challenges facing global tourism, from sustainability pressures to changing traveller expectations. But they underline the breadth of the Maldives’ tourism identity a destination increasingly associated not only with beaches and luxury resorts, but also with diving, environmental positioning and specialised travel experiences.
