Musk’s Boring Company Raises $3 Billion at $23 Billion Valuation as UAE Tunnel Plans Expand

2 min read

The Boring Company, the tunnel construction startup founded by billionaire Elon Musk, has raised $3 billion in a new funding round that values the company at $23 billion, marking a major increase in its valuation as it prepares to expand underground transportation projects in the United States and the United Arab Emirates.

The funding round was led by the United Arab Emirates and affiliated investment entities, with participation from major investors including Human Capital, Vy Capital, Valor Equity Partners, Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Temasek, Shamal Holding and Baron Capital.

The company said the new capital will help support an expanded partnership to develop more than 150 kilometers (93 miles) of underground infrastructure across the UAE. The plans build on the previously announced Dubai Loop project, an ambitious underground transportation network designed to move passengers rapidly through tunnels beneath the city.

The Boring Company also plans to use the funds to increase hiring across engineering, production and operations as it expands its Loop projects in Dubai, Las Vegas and Nashville. The company has been seeking to turn its tunnel technology into a broader transportation business capable of easing traffic congestion in major cities.

The latest investment represents a dramatic increase in the company’s value compared with 2022, when The Boring Company was valued at $5.7 billion after raising $675 million. The new $23 billion valuation reflects growing investor interest in the company’s long-term potential as governments and cities explore alternatives to conventional road infrastructure.

The UAE has become an important market for the company. Last year, The Boring Company and Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority signed a preliminary agreement to develop the Dubai Loop, providing a foundation for the expanded underground infrastructure plans.

Musk founded The Boring Company in 2017 after frequently criticizing traffic congestion and proposing underground transportation systems as a way to move people more efficiently. The company has since developed Loop projects intended to transport passengers through dedicated underground tunnels.

The latest fundraising gives The Boring Company significant new financial resources at a time when demand for large-scale urban transportation infrastructure is increasing. With the UAE partnership expanding and projects progressing in several U.S. cities, the company is now positioned to accelerate its push to make underground transportation a larger part of urban mobility.
