At least six people have been killed and dozens more injured after a series of Russian missile and drone strikes hit Ukraine, with Kyiv suffering one of the deadliest attacks in recent weeks.
The strikes began overnight and continued into the early hours of Thursday, sending residents across the Ukrainian capital rushing to shelters as explosions shook several districts. Ukrainian authorities said ballistic missiles struck multiple areas of Kyiv, damaging residential buildings and civilian infrastructure.
Fires broke out at several locations, including residential buildings and warehouses. A children’s hospital was also damaged in the attack, while emergency crews searched damaged buildings for people who may have been trapped under rubble. Parts of the capital were left without electricity following the strikes.
The death toll increased as rescue operations continued. While initial reports put the number of fatalities at five in Kyiv and another person in the wider Kyiv region, later Ukrainian officials reported a higher toll as emergency workers recovered victims from damaged buildings.
The attacks came as Russia and Ukraine continue to exchange long-range missile and drone strikes, despite ongoing diplomatic efforts to find a path toward ending the war. Ukraine has repeatedly appealed to its allies for additional air-defence systems, particularly equipment capable of intercepting ballistic missiles.
Russia’s Defence Ministry said its forces had struck facilities linked to drone-component production, a military depot and a logistics hub in Kyiv and the surrounding region.
The latest strikes have once again highlighted the danger faced by civilians in Ukraine, where residential areas and essential services remain vulnerable to attacks more than four years after Russia launched its full-scale invasion.
