Ukraine and Russia Trade Major Drone and Missile Strikes as War Escalates Across the Region

2 min read

Ukraine and Russia exchanged major drone and missile strikes over the weekend, marking another sharp escalation in the long-running war as both sides intensified attacks on military, industrial and logistical targets. The latest strikes also raised concerns about the conflict increasingly spilling beyond the two countries’ borders and placing additional pressure on European security.

Ukraine launched one of its largest drone offensives against Russia, with hundreds of drones reportedly targeting areas around Moscow and other regions. Russian authorities said the attacks caused deaths and damage, including a major fire at a warehouse belonging to Wildberries, one of Russia’s largest online retailers. Moscow said its air defenses intercepted hundreds of Ukrainian drones during the assault.

Ukraine has increasingly focused its long-range attacks on Russian military and economic infrastructure, seeking to disrupt logistics and facilities that support Moscow’s war effort. The latest offensive comes as Kyiv continues to develop longer-range weapons and expand its ability to strike targets deep inside Russian territory.

Russia responded with a wave of missile and drone attacks across Ukraine. In Kryvyi Rih, a Russian missile strike hit the ArcelorMittal steel plant, killing two people and damaging industrial infrastructure. Other Ukrainian cities and regions also reported casualties and damage.

The attacks have also created growing concerns for neighboring NATO countries. Romania reported that an F-18 fighter operating on a NATO air-policing mission shot down a drone that entered Romanian airspace during the latest wave of attacks. NATO officials indicated that the drone appeared to be Russian, although its origin was not immediately confirmed by Romanian authorities.

The escalation comes as Ukraine faces continued pressure on its air-defense capabilities while Russia seeks to maintain its ability to strike Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly appealed to Western allies for additional air-defense systems and ammunition.

With both sides expanding their aerial campaigns, the latest attacks underline the growing difficulty of containing the war. The widening use of long-range drones and missiles is increasing risks for civilians, businesses and neighboring European states, while adding urgency to diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict.
