Thailand is moving forward with a major railway investment aimed at improving transport links, boosting tourism and strengthening trade in the country’s southern region. The Ministry of Transport has submitted a proposal to the Cabinet for an investment of 106.8 billion baht for the second phase of the southern double-track railway project, with construction expected to begin in 2027.
The second phase will extend the double-track railway network toward the Padang Besar border checkpoint, an important connection between Thailand and Malaysia. The expansion is expected to improve connectivity for both passengers and freight while supporting stronger economic links across the southern region.
A key benefit of the project will be the replacement of existing single-track limitations with a more efficient double-track system. This is expected to increase passenger and freight capacity, reduce delays and provide more reliable long-distance rail services. For residents of southern Thailand, the improved network could make travel between cities and regional destinations faster and more convenient.
The project is also expected to support the tourism industry by making popular destinations in southern Thailand easier to reach. Better rail connections could encourage more domestic and international visitors to explore the region, while providing travelers with an alternative to road and air transportation.
Beyond tourism, the railway expansion is designed to strengthen Thailand’s role as a regional trading hub. Improved rail links to the Padang Besar border could facilitate the movement of goods between Thailand, Malaysia and wider international markets. The connection could also help integrate southern Thailand’s trading centers with international shipping routes.
The 106.8 billion baht investment therefore represents more than a transport upgrade. By improving passenger mobility, increasing freight capacity and connecting tourism and commercial centers, the southern double-track railway could contribute to regional economic growth and enhance Thailand’s competitiveness in Southeast Asia.
