Albania Is Emerging as Europe’s Next Affordable Beach Escape

Albania is rapidly becoming one of Europe’s most talked-about beach destinations, offering travelers crystal-clear waters, dramatic mountain scenery and Mediterranean-style coastal towns without the prices associated with better-known destinations such as Greece, Italy and Croatia.

The country’s appeal is particularly strong along the Albanian Riviera, where destinations including Ksamil, Sarandë, Himarë and Dhërmi combine turquoise Ionian waters with sandy coves, seafood restaurants and a growing selection of hotels and guesthouses. Albania welcomed more than 12 million foreign visitors in 2025, according to figures reported from the country’s statistical authorities, highlighting the speed at which international interest has grown.

Affordability remains one of the biggest attractions. Travelers can often find accommodation and dining at prices below those of many established Mediterranean resorts, while competition among hotels has helped create additional value in several coastal areas. In 2025, reports from Albania’s tourism sector indicated that hotel prices in some areas, including Sarandë, Ksamil, Vlora and Himarë, were reduced by between 10% and 25% as businesses competed for visitors. Durrës and Golem were particularly noted for their strong price-to-service balance.

Durrës, located relatively close to Tirana International Airport, is another option for travelers seeking an easier beach holiday. Recent booking data cited by The Sun showed an average five-night holiday in Durrës costing about £382 per person over the previous year, while Golem averaged around £335 for four nights.

Further south, Ksamil remains the country’s visual showpiece, with small offshore islands, bright blue water and beaches that have drawn comparisons with the Greek islands. Sarandë, meanwhile, provides a convenient base for exploring the Riviera, with ferry connections to Corfu and access to attractions such as Butrint.

Yet Albania’s growing popularity comes with a warning: the secret is no longer entirely secret. As visitor numbers continue to rise, infrastructure, crowds and development are becoming increasingly important issues. For travelers seeking the best combination of value and scenery, Albania may therefore be at its most appealing before prices and visitor numbers climb further.
