But a new ranking has placed Utah’s Mirror Lake Scenic Byway at the very top, naming it the most beautiful road in the country thanks to its striking alpine scenery, crystal-clear lakes, and dramatic mountain landscapes.
The 42-mile stretch, located in northeastern Utah, was ranked first in a study conducted by FLBR Motorsport. The research analyzed 45 scenic roads across the United States using Tripadvisor data, focusing on traveler reviews, average ratings, and how frequently the word “beautiful” appeared in descriptions. Mirror Lake Scenic Byway stood out above all others, with visitors consistently highlighting its breathtaking natural surroundings.
According to FLBR Motorsport, the route received the highest number of mentions of the word “beautiful,” suggesting that its scenery leaves a lasting impression on those who drive it. The organization noted that the byway’s combination of alpine lakes and towering mountain peaks makes it especially memorable for travelers seeking immersive natural beauty.
Located less than two hours from the Salt Lake City metropolitan area, the byway offers easy access to a wide range of outdoor activities. Visitors can enjoy hiking, fishing, swimming, kayaking, horseback riding, and mountain biking along the route. The Utah Office of Tourism describes it as a destination filled with “thick forests, glacially carved valleys, mountain lakes, and towering alpine summits,” making it ideal for both short scenic stops and longer adventure-filled trips.
However, the road is seasonal and typically closed during winter months due to heavy snowfall. It usually opens to vehicle traffic from mid-May through mid-fall, depending on weather conditions. While driving the route is free, some recreation areas along the way may charge small park entry or usage fees.
Travel experts and tourism officials say the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway offers a rare combination of accessibility and untouched wilderness. It provides travelers with an escape from city life while delivering a constantly changing landscape of forests, valleys, and high-altitude scenery.
In the same study, Colorado’s Silver Thread Scenic Byway ranked second, followed by the Cherohala Skyway stretching through Tennessee and North Carolina. Other top routes included Colorado’s San Juan Skyway and Wyoming’s Buffalo Bill Scenic Byway. Well-known drives such as the Great Smoky Mountains Foothills Parkway, California’s Big Sur Coast Drive, and Hawaii’s Hana Highway also made the list, though they ranked lower due to varying traveler feedback and accessibility challenges.
The results highlight the growing popularity of road trips based on authentic traveler experiences rather than traditional rankings. With its overwhelming praise from visitors and unmatched alpine scenery, Utah’s Mirror Lake Scenic Byway has firmly established itself as America’s most beautiful road trip destination.
