NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani Unveils $50 World Cup Ticket Plan for Residents

2 min read

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has announced a special initiative that will allow city residents to purchase 1,000 FIFA World Cup tickets for just $50 each, offering local fans a rare opportunity to attend one of the world’s biggest sporting events at an affordable price.

The discounted tickets will be available through a lottery system and are intended exclusively for New York City residents. The program covers seven World Cup matches scheduled to take place at MetLife Stadium in nearby New Jersey during the 2026 tournament, including five group-stage games and two knockout-round fixtures. The final match, however, is not included in the offer because of extremely high demand and pricing.

According to city officials, each ticket package will also include free round-trip transportation, making it easier for working-class fans and families to travel to the stadium without additional costs. The move comes amid growing criticism over soaring World Cup ticket prices, with many standard seats already selling for hundreds or even thousands of dollars on resale platforms.

Mayor Mamdani said the initiative is aimed at ensuring ordinary New Yorkers can experience the excitement of the World Cup firsthand. Speaking at an announcement event in Harlem, he emphasized that a global tournament hosted in the region should remain accessible to local communities rather than becoming an event only for wealthy fans and tourists.

The ticket lottery is expected to open later this month, with winners selected randomly. Officials also confirmed that the tickets will be non-transferable to prevent scalping and resale. Winners will reportedly receive their tickets shortly before match day.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, is expected to attract millions of visitors and generate billions of dollars in economic activity. New York and New Jersey will host several marquee matches at MetLife Stadium, making the region one of the tournament’s major centers.

Sports analysts and community leaders have praised the initiative as a significant step toward making major international sporting events more inclusive and affordable for local residents.
