A 17-year-old girl has been killed and three other people injured in a sword attack at a high school in central Sweden, police have confirmed, sending shockwaves through the local community.

The attack took place on Friday afternoon at Brinell School in Fagersta, shortly after students had returned to classrooms following the summer break. Two boys, aged 12 and 17, were seriously injured, while a third person suffered minor injuries, according to local authorities.

An 18-year-old man was arrested in connection with the attack. Police are treating the case as murder and attempted murder. The suspect has not been publicly identified.

Officers fired shots after arriving at the school following reports of the attack, although police have not said whether the suspect was injured by gunfire before he was detained. Swedish public broadcaster SVT reported that the suspect was wearing a helmet, while local media said he was a former student at the school.

The attack prompted authorities to declare a state of emergency in the region on Friday. The emergency situation was lifted on Saturday as investigators continued working to establish what led to the violence.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and opposition leader Magdalena Andersson visited the school on Saturday morning. Flowers were placed outside the school as students, families and members of the community mourned the victim and expressed support for those injured.

The incident has renewed concerns about violence in Swedish schools and the safety of students and staff. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack, including the suspect’s possible motives and his connection to the school.

For the Fagersta community, the violence has transformed what should have been a normal return to school after the summer holiday into a period of grief and uncertainty. Police are expected to provide further information as their investigation progresses.
