Van Hollen Condemns Trump’s Iran Strike as ‘Illegal War of Choice,’ Urges Congress to Intervene

U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen sharply criticized President Donald Trump on Friday, accusing him of launching what he described as an unjustified and unconstitutional military action against Iran without approval from Congress.

Van Hollen said the decision to initiate military operations amounts to a “regime-change war of choice” that violates the U.S. Constitution and risks dragging the United States into a broader conflict in the Middle East. He argued that the president’s actions make Americans less safe rather than protecting national security.

In a statement, the Maryland senator said the strike contradicts Trump’s previous promises to avoid starting new wars. “The president pledged to end endless wars, not start another one,” Van Hollen said, warning that the escalating confrontation could destabilize the region and endanger U.S. troops and allies.

The senator also urged lawmakers to assert their constitutional authority over war powers by passing a resolution that would require the administration to halt military operations unless Congress formally authorizes them. He called on both Democrats and Republicans to support a War Powers Resolution aimed at stopping what he described as Trump’s unauthorized war with Iran.

Under the Constitution, Congress holds the authority to declare war, though presidents have often initiated military actions without a formal declaration. Van Hollen argued that bypassing lawmakers undermines democratic oversight and increases the risk of prolonged conflict.

Tensions between Washington and Tehran have intensified in recent days, raising fears that the confrontation could expand into a wider regional war. Van Hollen said Congress must act quickly to prevent further escalation and to ensure that decisions about war are made with full legislative debate and approval.

“The American people do not want another war in the Middle East,” he said. “Congress must step in before this crisis spirals further out of control.”
