Five people were killed and five others seriously injured after an Amazon Air cargo plane crashed while attempting to land at Miami International Airport, authorities said.
The Boeing 767-300 cargo aircraft reportedly overshot the runway shortly before 14:00 local time on Sunday after arriving from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The aircraft also struck several vehicles on the ground, triggering a major emergency response at one of the busiest airports in the United States.
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava confirmed during a news conference that at least five people had died in the crash, while five others were injured. Three of those injured were reported to be in critical condition.
Emergency crews arrived at the scene within seconds, according to the mayor, as firefighters worked to contain the situation around the damaged aircraft and the surrounding crash site.
“Right now, our focus is on the families, those who were injured, and the ongoing response,” Levine Cava said.
The crash occurred during the Labor Day weekend, traditionally one of the busiest travel periods of the year in the United States. The Federal Aviation Administration ordered flights to be temporarily grounded as emergency services responded to the incident, creating significant disruption at Miami International Airport.
