Canada’s Iconic Berg Lake Trail Welcomes Hikers Again with a New Alpine Experience

2 min read

One of Canada’s most celebrated hiking routes has returned to the spotlight as the Berg Lake Trail in British Columbia reopens to visitors, offering outdoor enthusiasts the chance to once again experience one of North America’s most breathtaking alpine landscapes. The reopening is made even more special with the addition of a new backcountry alpine hut, providing hikers with a unique opportunity to spend the night beneath the towering presence of Mount Robson.

Located in Mount Robson Provincial Park, just west of Jasper National Park, the Berg Lake Trail stretches between 42 and 48 kilometres for a round trip. Renowned for its dramatic scenery, the trail takes hikers through dense forests, across glacier-fed rivers, and past a series of spectacular waterfalls before reaching the turquoise waters of Berg Lake at the foot of Mount Robson, the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies.

The journey begins with a steady climb through lush woodland before revealing breathtaking views of the Valley of a Thousand Falls. Along the route, hikers encounter White Falls and the powerful Emperor Falls, where mist fills the air and the roar of rushing water echoes through the valley. As the trail climbs higher, panoramic views of glaciers, rugged mountain peaks, and crystal-clear alpine lakes create unforgettable scenery that has made the route a favourite among hikers from around the world.

The newly opened alpine hut adds a fresh dimension to the Berg Lake experience. Visitors can now spend the night surrounded by pristine wilderness, allowing more time to explore the area, enjoy sunrise and sunset views of Mount Robson, and appreciate the peaceful beauty of the Canadian Rockies without rushing through the trek.

The trail’s reopening follows years of restoration work after severe flooding damaged sections of the route, forcing its closure. Park officials and conservation teams worked extensively to rebuild bridges, stabilize trails, and restore access while protecting the surrounding environment.

With its glacier-fed waterfalls, turquoise lakes, towering peaks, and abundant wildlife, the Berg Lake Trail remains one of Canada’s premier hiking destinations. The combination of restored access and improved overnight facilities is expected to attract both experienced backpackers and adventurous nature lovers eager to experience one of the country’s most iconic wilderness journeys.
