The season opener between Manchester United and Fulham didn’t have the pyrotechnics spectators were looking for, but the Red Devils nevertheless prevailed 1-0 to start the campaign.

Joshua Zirkzee, a recent addition to the Premier League, provided a bright spark for the game, however. When it seemed like there was not much time left, the 23-year-old scored the game’s lone goal in the 87th minute to give United the victory.

On Friday, Zirkzee made his Manchester United debut. He entered the game in the 61st minute, and the Old Trafford crowd didn’t have to wait long for their new addition to have a significant impact.

After a cross from Alejandro Garnacho, the striker—who moved to Manchester United from Bologna in July—deftly finished the play to put the ball in the back of the net.

“It couldn’t be better to win here in my first home game and to grab a goal,” Zirkzee said “We won, and that’s all we wanted in the end, and the fans deserve that as well, so to have this as an added bonus is just lovely.”

“It’s just really nice; I can’t really explain it.”

Due to both teams’ inability to generate opportunities throughout the match, the Premier League opening appeared to be ending in a 0-0 stalemate.

The Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno twice made a fantastic save to deny Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes.

Mason Mount also had a chance for the home team before Zirkzee’s late goal gave his new team the victory.

Despite finishing in a disappointing eighth place in the Premier League, Manchester United defeated rival Manchester City in the FA Cup final to cap off the season.

The team led by Erik ten Hag will be hoping that the winning spirit from the trophy game carries over into the upcoming campaign.

“You must win, of course, especially at the beginning of the season. Obtain your victories, as this will bolster the team’s confidence and belief. But I was happy with the way we handled it. Ten Hag told NBC Sports following the victory, “Not everything is 100%, but from this point we can build.”
