Fear of Elon Musk’s influence cast a shadow over the making of a new documentary about the billionaire entrepreneur, director Alex Gibney said as the film premiered at the Venice Film Festival.
Gibney, the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind documentaries examining powerful figures and institutions, said many people were reluctant to speak publicly about Musk while he was working on Musk. The nearly four-hour film, which premiered out of competition in Venice, explores Musk’s rise from technology entrepreneur to one of the most influential figures in business, politics and social media.
Gibney initially hoped Musk would participate in the project, but the Tesla and SpaceX chief declined to be interviewed. Instead, the filmmaker relied on interviews with former associates, journalists and people who have had personal or professional relationships with Musk. The documentary also uses an AI-generated avatar and voice technology to recreate Musk’s presence using statements he has made publicly.
According to Gibney, the reluctance of potential interviewees reflected the extraordinary power Musk has accumulated through his companies and public influence. The documentary examines his leadership of Tesla and SpaceX, his acquisition of Twitter, now known as X, and his growing involvement in politics.
Among those featured is Ashley St. Clair, a former partner of Musk, who has publicly discussed their relationship and said she rejected a reported $40 million non-disclosure agreement. She is among several people whose accounts contribute to the film’s examination of Musk’s private life and public persona.
The film presents a sharply critical portrait of Musk, questioning how his wealth, technology platforms and political influence have combined to give him an unusually powerful position in modern society. Gibney has said the project changed his own perception of Musk as he investigated the facts behind the public image.
Musk arrives at a time when the billionaire remains a polarizing figure whose companies and political activities continue to attract intense global attention. The documentary is scheduled for theatrical release in the United States in October.
