In order to counteract the detrimental effects on the environment, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has emphasized how important it is to grow trees.

President Dr. Muizzu said on social media in honor of World Ozone Day (WOD) that planting trees and enhancing green spaces are practical and affordable ways to mitigate environmental effects. Advancing Climate Action: The Montreal Protocol is this year’s WOD theme.

On the occasion of World Environment Day 2024, President Dr. Muizzu and First Lady Sajida Mohamed launched the Five Million Trees Planting Program earlier in June with the goal of minimizing adverse environmental effects. The president of the Maldives has made a historic commitment to plant five million trees.

With ninety species classified as endangered in the Maldives, one of the program’s main goals is to revive endangered species. During the initiative’s launch, a total of 22 different types of trees were planted in the park, including fruit trees, garden trees, shade trees, medicinal plants, and endangered species.

By launching the Five Million Trees Planting Programme, the administration is demonstrating its dedication to battling climate change and safeguarding the nation’s delicate environmental ecosystems, attempting to minimize its effects both now and in the future for the benefit of coming generations. In the Maldives, this is by far the biggest tree plantation operation ever started. In an effort to support the Maldives’ planned five million tree planting programs, the government has called on neighboring countries to donate trees and encourages all citizens to take part in the planting endeavor.
