August 7, Paris (Reuters) – Wednesday saw China win their first gold medal in artistic swimming at the Paris Olympics thanks to a dynamic team performance that dazzled the judges and put them well ahead of the United States, who finished in second place.
Since Russia, which has long dominated artistic swimming, was not allowed to compete in the Games, China triumphed in gold medal swimming, while the United States took second and Spain took bronze.
Applauding from the audience, the Chinese team threw one swimmer into the air while donning red, glittery swimsuits, and she even did several flips in the water.
China’s acrobatic act had the theme “Light of Life,” and the singer chanted parts of the song as it played, providing a powerful musical backdrop for the performance.
According to Zhang Xiaohuan, one of the Chinese coaches, the swimmers created a shape that resembled a mountain, signifying the effort the team had put in to win the gold medal.
As per Zhang Xiaohuan, a Chinese coach, the swimmers created a mountain-like shape that symbolized the hard work the squad had to put in to win the gold medal.
With their ethereal dance themed “the sorceresses,” the United States won their first medal in the team event since the 2004 Athens Games.
With a total score of 996.1389, China outscored the United States (914.3421) and Spain (900.7319).
The duo artistic swimming event starts on Friday, and China, who were favorites to win the acrobatic team title prior to Paris, have a chance to win another gold.
