The Via dell’Amore: What is it?

Encircling a series of five villages that comprise the Cinque Terre UNESCO World Heritage Site, the 1-kilometer path goes around them. With breathtaking views of the surroundings and the ocean, the paved walk hugs the coast.

It was constructed at the start of the 20th century as part of the modernization of the railway line that connected Genoa and La Spezia. While a tunnel was being built, railroad workers required a method to go between Riomaggiore and Manarola.

According to legend, couples from the two towns would meet on the footpath that was hewn out of the hard rock face that overhung the sea.

In order to strengthen the landscape, 8,800 plants have been planted and steel mesh has been used to encapsulate the rocks above and below the pathway. Additionally, a monitoring system has been put in place to enable early warnings of any impending landslides.

Stop overcrowding the Via dell’Amore with tourists.

The five communities that make up Liguria’s Cinque Terre are renowned for their jewel-toned structures carved out of seaside cliffs.

Encircled by a national park, this UNESCO World Heritage Site welcomes about 2.4 million visitors annually who stroll, paddle, or ride their bikes through the scenic environs.

The Via dell’Amore is one of the most well-known sections of the Cinque Terre coastline and is extremely well-liked by tourists.

The chain of coastal towns has been fighting off overtourism by imposing fines of up to €275 on tourists who obstruct vehicles or pedestrians by stopping to take long pictures.

The Via dell’Amore is a “jewel for our region, not just for those who visit,” according to Giovanni Toti, president of the Liguria Region.
