Parenting is no easy feat, even for the young and vibrant. But Wisdom, a Laysan Albatross and the world’s oldest known wild bird, is defying the odds. At an astonishing 74 years old, she is preparing to welcome yet another chick.
Wisdom belongs to millions of Laysan Albatrosses that flock annually to Midway Atoll near Hawaii to nest. Over her remarkable lifetime, she has laid more than 50 eggs. For decades, Wisdom raised her chicks with her long-time partner, as these birds are known for their monogamous nature. However, her partner has not been seen in years, prompting her to pair with a new mate.
This year, Wisdom has laid another egg, and her new partner is actively assisting in incubation. “We are optimistic that the egg will hatch,” said Jonathan Plissner, supervisory wildlife biologist at Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge. Photographs and videos from the US Fish and Wildlife Service show the proud couple chirping to their egg and taking turns incubating it.
A Lifetime of Resilience
Wisdom was first identified and tagged in 1956 when she laid her inaugural egg at the refuge. At that time, she was at least five years old—the age when Laysan Albatrosses reach sexual maturity. Her incredible journey has made her a symbol of endurance and adaptability, as she is now at least 74 years old, possibly older.
Laysan Albatrosses are known for their impressive physical attributes. With a wingspan of up to 80 inches (203 cm), these seabirds can travel over 930 miles (1,500 km) in search of food. Their average lifespan is typically 40 to 50 years, far exceeding most bird species. Wisdom’s longevity has shattered expectations, highlighting the unique resilience of seabirds.
The Legacy of Albatrosses
Albatrosses, including Wisdom, have captured human imagination for centuries. Found primarily in the Southern Hemisphere and North Pacific Ocean, there are more than a dozen species of these majestic birds. They’ve also been immortalized in literature, such as Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, where an albatross plays a pivotal symbolic role.
Wisdom’s extraordinary story is not only a testament to nature’s wonders but also a reminder of the importance of conservation. As she prepares to bring another life into the world, Wisdom continues to inspire and amaze wildlife enthusiasts worldwide.
Why Wisdom Matters
Her story sheds light on the fascinating lives of seabirds and underscores the critical role wildlife refuges play in protecting these creatures. Wisdom’s journey also reminds us of the resilience of life and the beauty of second chances, even at an age when most would consider slowing down.
