At least nine people have been killed and dozens more injured after Russia launched a large-scale overnight attack on several Ukrainian cities, intensifying the conflict amid rising tensions between Moscow and Kyiv.
The heaviest strikes were reported in the capital, Kyiv, and the southeastern city of Dnipro during the early hours of Tuesday. According to local authorities, four people were killed and at least 51 others were injured in Kyiv, with 35 requiring hospitalization. In Dnipro, five people lost their lives and 25 were wounded as missiles struck residential and urban areas.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said two high-rise apartment buildings were severely damaged in the attack, raising fears that additional victims may be trapped beneath the rubble. Emergency crews continued rescue operations throughout the day as residents were urged to remain in shelters.
“The enemy is striking with ballistic missiles,” said Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s City Military Administration, as air raid sirens sounded across much of the country. Large plumes of smoke were seen rising over central Kyiv following multiple explosions.
The latest assault comes days after Moscow warned it would carry out “systematic strikes” against Ukraine. The warning followed a drone attack last month on a dormitory in the Russian-occupied Luhansk region, where 21 people were reported killed. Russian officials blamed Kyiv for the incident and vowed retaliation.
The overnight barrage marks one of the most significant attacks in recent weeks and highlights the continued escalation of hostilities despite ongoing international calls for restraint. Ukrainian authorities said air defense systems were activated in several regions, though many missiles succeeded in reaching their targets.
Meanwhile, across the border in Russia, officials reported a drone attack on the Ilsky Oil Refinery in the Krasnodar Krai region. The local emergency response center said the strike triggered a fire at the facility, but no casualties were reported.
As both sides continue to exchange attacks, concerns are growing over the humanitarian toll of the conflict, with civilians increasingly caught in the crossfire of an escalating war that shows little sign of easing.
