Israel’s continuous onslaught is making it difficult for Lebanon’s healthcare system to meet the growing demands, according to the head of the World Health Organization (WHO).
“As a result of the violence, 100 of the 207 basic health care facilities located in conflict areas of Lebanon have now closed. Following attacks, five hospitals are closed due to structural damage, according to Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who spoke on X on Saturday.
“The attacks on health workers and facilities, which have caused almost 100 deaths, must stop,” he stated.
The WHO director stated that the health system is having difficulty keeping up with the rising number of injuries because of a shortage of personnel and resources.
Ghebreyesus demanded that medical personnel and patients be immediately protected.
Israel’s lethal incursions into Lebanon
Since September 23, Israel has launched many airstrikes across Lebanon against targets it believes are affiliated with Hezbollah, resulting in the deaths of at least 1,411 people, over 3,970 injuries, and over 1.34 million displaced persons.
Following a year of cross-border combat between Israel and Hezbollah since the latter’s invasion on Gaza began, the aerial campaign represents an intensification of Israel’s operations. Since a Hamas attack last year, Israel has killed close to 42,200 Palestinians, the majority of whom were women and children.
Israel escalated the conflict on October 1 by launching a ground invasion into southern Lebanon, defying international warnings that the Middle East was on the verge of a regional war due to its persistent attacks on Gaza and Lebanon.
