A Ukrainian member of parliament has criticized the original U.S. peace proposal aimed at ending the war between Ukraine and Russia, saying parts of the plan were disappointing for many Ukrainians seeking a just and lasting peace.
Speaking on 25 November 2025, Halyna Yanchenko, a member of Ukraine’s parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, said she believes “it’s a shame” that the original 28-point peace proposal reportedly included elements that could have placed significant pressure on Ukraine while the war continues.
Yanchenko made the remarks during an interview on the CNN program The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer, hosted by Wolf Blitzer and Pamela Brown. During the discussion, she addressed the ongoing diplomatic efforts involving the United States, Ukraine, and Russia to find a negotiated settlement to the conflict.
According to Yanchenko, Ukraine supports diplomatic initiatives to bring an end to the war, but any peace framework must respect the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. She emphasized that Ukrainians expect peace negotiations to reflect the sacrifices made since the conflict escalated and warned that proposals perceived as forcing Ukraine into concessions could undermine public trust in the process.
Negotiations over potential peace terms remain complex, with discussions focusing on ceasefire arrangements, security guarantees for Ukraine, and the future status of territories currently under Russian control.
Yanchenko noted that while international mediation is important, the final decision on any agreement must ultimately serve Ukraine’s national interests. She added that a sustainable peace must ensure long-term security and justice for the Ukrainian people.
The remarks highlight the challenges facing diplomats as efforts continue to broker a settlement that could bring an end to one of Europe’s most significant conflicts in recent decades.
