Canada: Ontario Labour Minister David Piccini is facing mounting pressure to resign from Premier Doug Ford’s cabinet after the province’s integrity commissioner launched a formal ethics investigation into the government’s handling of the $2.5 billion Skills Development Fund.
On Thursday, the integrity commissioner confirmed the acceptance of requests from opposition parties to investigate whether Piccini contravened sections of Ontario’s Members’ Integrity Act. The probe will examine the application and selection process of the Skills Development Fund’s Training Stream, a key component of the province’s workforce development strategy.
The fund was created to support skills training and workforce development across Ontario, particularly in response to labour shortages and economic transition. However, opposition parties have raised concerns about transparency, oversight, and whether political considerations influenced funding decisions.
Critics argue that the scale of the fund and its importance to Ontario workers demand the highest standards of accountability. They have called on Premier Doug Ford to remove Piccini from cabinet while the investigation is underway, saying the integrity of the process must be protected.
Piccini has not admitted to any wrongdoing and has maintained that the fund was administered appropriately and in accordance with established rules. The premier’s office has also stated that the government will cooperate fully with the integrity commissioner’s investigation.
The outcome of the probe could carry significant political consequences for the Ford government, particularly as questions continue to be raised about ethics, transparency, and public trust in the allocation of major public funds in Canada’s most populous province.
The integrity commissioner’s investigation is ongoing, and no findings have yet been released.
