Within 57 seconds, Lucas Vazquez gave the La Liga winners the lead, and when Jude Bellingham set him up, Frenchman Kylian Mbappe finished well to find the back of the net.

Soon after the restart, Rodrygo added a third, but in the 85th minute, Carlos Benavidez gave the visitors a goal back.

Carlo Ancelotti’s team managed to hold on despite Kike Garcia of Deportivo adding a second minute later to guarantee a nerve-wracking finish.

With his current goal, Mbappe, 25, has seven goals in nine Real Madrid games this season, including six in his last seven.

He and Bellingham had also connected in the 23rd minute but the attacker had his effort into the bottom corner ruled out for offside.

After his contract with Paris St. Germain expired in July, Mbappe signed a five-year contract to join Real Madrid.
