Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared that Russia will continue its military campaign in Ukraine until it achieves its objective of fully controlling four Ukrainian regions, rejecting what he described as a new proposal from Kyiv to halt long-range strikes. The remarks, made during an interview with Russian state television, signal Moscow’s determination to pursue its battlefield goals despite ongoing diplomatic efforts to reduce hostilities.
Putin said Russia would not accept Ukraine’s proposal to limit long-range attacks, insisting that military operations would continue until Russian forces secure complete control over the regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia. Moscow claims these territories as part of Russia, while Ukraine and most of the international community continue to recognize them as Ukrainian sovereign territory.
The Russian leader also acknowledged that Ukrainian drone attacks have intensified in recent months, targeting oil refineries, fuel depots, and other critical infrastructure deep inside Russian territory. While admitting that the strikes have created temporary fuel shortages in some areas, Putin maintained that the situation remains under control and urged authorities to accelerate the production and deployment of additional air defence systems to counter the growing drone threat.
The conflict, now in its fifth year, has evolved into a prolonged war of attrition, with both sides relying heavily on drones, long-range missiles, and advanced military technology. Ukrainian forces have increasingly targeted strategic facilities inside Russia in an effort to disrupt fuel supplies and weaken Moscow’s military logistics, while Russia has continued missile and drone strikes across Ukraine.
Putin’s latest comments suggest there is little prospect of an immediate breakthrough in peace negotiations. His rejection of Ukraine’s proposal underscores the deep divisions between the two sides, with both remaining committed to fundamentally different visions for ending the conflict.
As fighting continues across multiple frontlines, civilians on both sides continue to bear the consequences of the prolonged war. The latest exchange of statements highlights that despite intermittent diplomatic initiatives, the path toward a negotiated settlement remains uncertain, while military operations are expected to continue in the months ahead.
