TIME unveils annual list of world’s most influential people

Time magazine has published its annual list of the 100 most influential people, highlighting individuals from around the world whose actions are shaping politics, culture, business and science.

The TIME 100 list, first launched in 2004, aims to recognise impact rather than status, bringing together a diverse group of leaders, innovators and public figures. Those selected are considered to have significant influence on global events and public discourse.

This year’s list includes prominent political figures such as Joe Biden, as well as business leaders like Elon Musk. Cultural figures also feature strongly, including singer-songwriter Taylor Swift. The list also recognises emerging voices such as Balane Sha, reflecting how influence is increasingly shaped by new and diverse perspectives.

The list is divided into categories including Leaders, Artists, Pioneers, Titans and Icons. Each honouree is profiled within the magazine, often with a short essay written by another influential figure, offering insight into their achievements and wider impact.

Editors at TIME say the selections are based on the influence individuals have had over the past year, rather than their long-term legacy. The list typically includes a balance of well-known global figures and lesser-known individuals whose work is gaining recognition.

The publication says it aims to provide a snapshot of the people driving change across different sectors and regions. Issues such as climate change, technological innovation, social justice and global conflict are often reflected through the work of those included.

While the list is widely regarded as one of the most recognisable measures of global influence, it has also drawn criticism over the years, with some questioning the selection process and representation. Despite this, it continues to generate significant attention worldwide.

The release of the TIME 100 often sparks discussion about who holds influence in an increasingly connected world, and how power is defined in the modern era.
