Panama Named the World’s Best Country for Expats in 2026 as Slower Living Draws Foreign Residents

Panama has been ranked the best country for expats in 2026, attracting international residents with its affordable lifestyle, economic stability, tropical surroundings and growing appeal for remote workers.

For Ariel Barrionuevo, who moved from Argentina to Panama’s Caribbean coast eight years ago, the change was noticeable almost immediately. He said he began sleeping more deeply, waking up feeling rested and becoming more present in his daily life. He now works as director of La Coralina Island House on Isla Colón and has embraced the slower pace of life.

His routine often includes visiting the ocean, walking through tropical gardens and listening to birds. Barrionuevo says Panama has also offered a more affordable lifestyle than Argentina, while its relatively stable economy has made financial and business planning more predictable.

Panama’s appeal is also growing among remote professionals. Reza Motalebpour, who moved from Canada to Panama City this year, said working remotely has been convenient thanks to reliable internet at home and in coworking spaces. She has also found banking relatively straightforward, particularly because Panama uses the U.S. dollar alongside its local currency system.

Although some expenses can initially appear high for Canadians because of exchange rates, Motalebpour says lower utility bills, insurance costs and property taxes can make the overall cost of living attractive.

Panama does have challenges. Barrionuevo points to occasional late deliveries and unpredictable weather, particularly on Isla Colón. But he believes accepting a slower rhythm is part of what makes life there appealing.

The 2026 ranking places Mexico second, followed by Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, Brazil, Spain, Singapore, Portugal, Malaysia and Luxembourg.

For visitors considering a longer-term move, Barrionuevo recommends exploring Panama beyond its major tourist attractions. His suggestions include visiting Bluff Beach, buying fresh fruit from roadside vendors and spending an afternoon watching surfers at Paunch Beach.

As more professionals seek affordable destinations and a better balance between work and personal life, Panama’s combination of tropical scenery, connectivity and relaxed living is helping strengthen its position as a leading destination for expats.
