Airport chaos spreads across Europe as new border system triggers delays

2 min read

Airports across Europe are experiencing widespread disruption after the introduction of a new digital border control system, with passengers reporting long queues, missed flights and delays at multiple major hubs.

The new system, designed to modernise border checks and improve security, has led to slower processing times during its early rollout phase, particularly at busy international terminals.

Travellers at airports in countries including Europe have described waiting times stretching to several hours, with some passengers unable to complete connections as scheduled.

Airport operators say the disruption is largely due to the scale of the changeover, which requires new biometric and data verification procedures for non-EU arrivals. Staff are also adapting to updated systems, contributing to slower throughput at peak times.

Officials insist the issues are temporary and part of a “transition period” as the system is phased in. They say the long-term aim is to strengthen border security while making travel more efficient.

However, airlines have warned that continued delays could have a knock-on effect across the wider aviation network, particularly during the busy travel season. Some carriers have already adjusted schedules to account for longer processing times.

Passengers have expressed frustration at the situation, with many saying they were given little advance warning of the scale of disruption.

“We were in line for over two hours and still missed our connecting flight,” one traveller said at a major European hub.

The new system is expected to be fully implemented across participating countries in the coming months, but authorities acknowledge that further teething problems are likely before it becomes fully operational.

For now, airports across Europe remain under pressure as they adapt to one of the most significant changes to border processing in years.
